Lichfield Radio – Accessible Guest Experience & Easy Read Support Document

Focus:
Guest experience · Accessible communication · Easy Read design · Inclusive media practice

Accessibility Objective

Lichfield Radio works with a wide range of guests, including disabled and neurodivergent people, first-time speakers, and community members who may feel anxious about being on air.

The objective of this project was to create a clear, supportive Easy Read document that prepares guests for the radio experience, reduces uncertainty, and helps them feel confident, respected, and in control throughout their visit.

Project Overview

This engagement focused on designing an accessibility-first, guest-facing document that explains the radio journey in simple, predictable steps.

The work is balanced:

  • Clear, friendly language

  • Calm and consistent layout

  • Practical guidance for real-world situations

The document was designed to be usable both digitally and in print, supporting independent access before, during, and after a guest’s appearance.

Accessibility in Practice

  • Short sentences and plain language

  • Clear headings and predictable structure

  • High contrast colours

  • Large, readable text

  • Generous spacing between lines and sections

The document was designed to work well when:

  • Printed

  • Read on a phone or tablet

  • Used with a screen reader

Accessibility Checks

  • Plain English review

  • Screen reader compatibility

  • Visual contrast review

  • Layout testing for digital and print use

Impact

The accessible, guest-focused approach helped:

  • Reduce anxiety before arriving at the station

  • Improve understanding of what “going on air” means

  • Increase confidence and willingness to take part

Feedback highlighted that guests felt:

  • Calm

  • Supported

  • Proud to share their story

Why This Matters

For community media, inclusion starts before the microphone is turned on.

Clear, accessible information helps people:

  • Make informed choices

  • Feel in control of their experience

  • Take part in local media and storytelling

This project demonstrates how simple, inclusive design can remove barriers and amplify more voices.
